The Windham Rec Department sponsors an outdoor showing of the film "Diary of a Whimpy Kid" Friday at 7:45 p.m. at the baseball field at Memorial Park. Rain date: Saturday.

Puppet-building workshop
The Ballard Institute sponsors a 2-day community puppet-building workshop at the Mansfield Community Center Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Led by Sara Peattie of Boston's Puppeteers Cooperative. Open to all, free. Sewing experience helpful. Registration appreciated by calling 429-2740.
Tailgate meet and Greet
8th District (Coventry, Columbia and Vernon) State Rep. candidate Tim Ackert sponsors a tailgate meet and greet Sat. starting at 3 p.m. Watch the UConn-Michigan football game at Ackert Hall, 1265 Main St., Coventry. Food provided.
Huntington Homestead Open House
The Samuel Huntington Homestead, birthplace of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Route 14 in Scotland, holds an open house Sat. from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tours. Free, donations appreciated.

Columbia transportation to Ted's
Columbia has received a grant from the State of CT to provide transportation to and from Ted's Supermarket in Hebron. This Program is open to all Columbia seniors and disabled residents. The trips are scheduled for every Tuesday morning with a pick up and return to your home. Pick up will be between 9:15 and 9:45 AM with an hour allowed for shopping to begin at 10:00AM. Sign up for the trip must be done on the Thursday prior to the trip and cancellation on Monday prior to the trip before 3:00 PM. Willimantic Orchestra openings

Jazz in the Garden
Jazz In The Garden, Sun. Sept. 12, from 3 to 6 p.m., is a unique blend of jazz music served with creative appetizers, a silent auction of original works and an open bar held in a formal garden setting around 200 year old homes in the Windham Center Town Green circ. 1692. This year two musical venues will be present. The famed Willimantic Amphibian Jazz Ensemble whose primary goal is to entertain and share the history of jazz music in the local area will once again perform. New to the event members of the acclaimed a cappella vocal ensemble Take Note! will perform jazz standards. The fund raiser is to benefit The Windham Free Library and is held in a beautiful Italianate villa home and garden at 10 Windham Center Road, within walking distance of a J. Alden Weir summer home in the largest historic district in Connecticut. Tickets are $45 and can be reserved or purchased on the day of the event. Smith High School. An all-town picnic with musical entertainment by Flamingo. Bring your own food. Hot-air balloon rides.

Sunday: Celebrate Mansfield Parade at noon, includes the UConn Marchng Band. Annual Festival on the Green follows. Entertainment: UConn Marching Band, Kidsville Kuckoo Revue, David Foster and the Shaboo All Stars, Christine Ohlman and James Montgomery.
